Yovani Gallardo pitched seven sharp innings and hit his second homer of the season, helping the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 Friday night to inch closer in the NL Central race. Gallardo allowed five hits and two runs for Milwaukee, which pulled within 1 1/2 games of division-leading Chicago.

Milwaukee rookie left-hander Manny Parra was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday with a broken left thumb, leaving the Brewers with another hole in their rotation. Parra, injured while bunting in Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs, hopes to pitch again in two weeks but acknowledged he might not return this season.

Murton, Soriano hit back-to-back homers to lead Cubs past Brewers 5-4 (AP)
Matt Murton and Alfonso Soriano hit back-to-back homers off Chris Capuano in the sixth inning Thursday night and the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 5-4 to push their lead in the NL Central back to 2 1/2 games. Chicago took two of three in their final series of the season with the second-place Brewers.

Brewers starter Manny Parra leaves after 3 innings due to bruised left thumb (AP)
Milwaukee Brewers rookie lefty Manny Parra had to leave Thursday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs with a bruised left thumb after pitching just three innings. Parra will be examined Friday by Milwaukee team doctor William Raasch. In his second major league start, Parra gave up three hits and three runs.
