The signing of free agent Mike Cameron left many wondering where young center fielder Tony Gwynn Jr. fit in the Brewers’ plans.
General manager Doug Melvin explained that the club’s win-now philosophy made him reluctant to commit to the inexperienced Gwynn as his everyday center fielder in 2008. It was that same line of thinking that led to the move of error-prone third baseman Ryan Braun to left field.
In short, Melvin said there is no time for on-the-job training at the top level, not after falling two games short of winning the NL Central last season.
”We’re not down on Tony Gwynn,” said Melvin.
